OILERS TOP MAVS IN SHOOTOUT
Tulsa takes back-and-forth game in a seven-round shootout, as Dmitri Ognev scores the shootout-winning goal.
INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Tulsa Oilers bounced back from some second period adversity to eventually defeat the Missouri Mavericks 3-2 in a seven-round shootout Saturday at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
Early in the first period, Ben Murphy gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead when he deflected in a Darcy Murphy centering pass 2:36 into the game. Missouri received four first period power plays, but Tulsa killed off all four, and Jamie Phillips stopped all 10 Mavericks shots.
Missouri’s Sam Povorozniouk scored his second goal of the weekend to tie the game at 1-1 when he snapped a shot under the crossbar. Then Dane Fox gave the Mavericks the lead, when a net-mouth collision knocked Phillips out of position, and Fox buried the puck into the open net. The Oilers would respond, however, when Phil Brewer tipped in a shot from the point past Missouri goaltender Ville Husso to even the score at 2-2 after two periods.
Both goaltenders stood tall in the third period as the game went to overtime, and Phillips stopped two breakaways in the extra frame to help get the two teams to a shootout. Both teams’ first two shooters scored, Christophe Lalancette and Miles Koules for Tulsa; Radoslav Illo and Povorozniouk for Missouri. Then the goalies took over, until Dmitri Ognev fired the game-winner past Husso in the seventh round to win it.
The Oilers return home next week for three games against Mountain Division teams. Tulsa takes on the Alaska Aces for the first time in franchise history Wednesday at 7:05pm at the BOK Center. It will be the only meeting between the two teams this year. The Oilers will then host the Colorado Eagles Friday and Saturday at the BOK Center at 7:05pm both nights.
