OILERS SALVAGE TWO POINTS AGAINST QUAD CITY
Tulsa wins weekend finale 2-1 thanks to third period tiebreaking goal by Roman Ammirato.
TULSA, OK – The Tulsa Oilers fended off the Quad City Mallards 2-1 Sunday in the finale of a three-game series to salvage two points on the weekend.
Tulsa took the game’s first lead, when Charlie Sampair snuck a low shot past C.J. Motte from the left circle at 6:38. It was Sampair’s 30th goal of the season. Quad City evened the score 1:23 later when Chris Izmirlian snapped a shot over the glove of Jake Hildebrand into the top corner of the net. The Oilers outshot the Mallards 18-7 in the frame.
Neither team managed to gain the lead in the second period, as Motte and Hildebrand stopped everything they saw. Tulsa narrowly outshot Quad City 13-11 to push the Oilers’ two-period advantage to 31-18, as the game stayed 1-1 entering the third.
Rookie forward Roman Ammirato scored his first pro goal 32 seconds into the third period to put the Oilers back in front for good. Tulsa withstood a late Mallards push to close out the 2-1 win to pull even with Allen again in the Mountain Division standings with five games remaining.
Hildebrand stopped 21 of 22 Quad City shots to earn his 15th win of the season, while Motte stopped 38 of 40 in the loss.
The Oilers head to Wichita next Friday for the final meeting of the year with the Thunder at INTRUST Bank Arena at 7:05pm. Catch the action on The Sports Animal in Tulsa or online at www.tulsaoilers.com and ECHL.TV, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45pm.
