OILERS FALL TO MARINERS AFTER THIRD PERIOD COMEBACK
Mariners net five goals in the final frame to win 5-2.
PORTLAND, Maine —The Tulsa Oilers, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks and the AHL’s San Diego Gulls, fell 5-2 to the Maine Mariners on Sunday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena.
Both teams started slow offensively out of the gate, with the first period ending scoreless with a combined 14 shots total.
Only 13 seconds remained in the opening half of the game when Tyler Poulsen hammered home a seam-feed from Jackson Leef to open the scoring 1-0 in Tulsa’s favor. Leef added a goal of his own with 4:22 left in the second period, extending the lead to 2-0. Kalvyn Watson added his first professional assist on the goal, giving the rookie points in back-to-back games.
The third period was all Mariners. Reid Stefanson opened the scoring 4:33 into the frame, batting the puck out of the air and cutting Tulsa’s lead to 2-1. Mitchell Fossier tied the game 2-2 6:48 into the final period, finishing a tic-tac-toe sequence on the power-play. Tim Doherty collected a natural hat trick with goals at 7:59, 14:01 and 18:26, securing the victory and a playoff spot for the Mariners in the process. Doherty’s final goal was a short-handed empty netter.
The Oilers now head to Wichita, Kansas, taking on the Thunder at INTRUST Bank Arena on Wednesday, April 5 for a day game at 10:30 a.m.
